Addel Junior provides a concentrated solution of five essential trace elements: zinc, manganese, copper, selenium, and iodine, and is formulated to meet the basal requirements for these micronutrients. Addel junior can be used with macronutrients as part of the nutritional therapy of preterm and term newborns, infants, and children.1

Trace element (TE) deficiencies can interfere with growth and development

Trace elements are essential to maintain fundamental metabolic functions.3 Neonates who are born preterm and newborns or infants who are critically ill, have undergone surgery, or are burned are at risk of TE deficiencies.2,3 Typical TE deficiency state symptoms may include growth failure, diarrhea, hair loss and skin rash, neutropenia, anemia and neurological manifestations, and cardiomyopathy.3 An international consensus paper highlighted that routine provision of micronutrients from commencement of therapy is widely recommended but is far from universal practice.3 To avoid the risk of deficiencies, ESPGHAN/ESPEN/ESPR/CSPEN guidelines recommend trace elements be administered daily for infants and children receiving PN.4
