When you give them macros, don’t forget the micros. Micronutrients are essential for the body to carry out and maintain multiple metabolic processes. Especially, in patients receiving PN, routine and appropriate provision of certain trace elements is necessary, not only to allow the patient’s underlying disease process to improve, but also to avoid deficiency or toxicity.1  Addel Trace is formulated to meet patients’ requirements of nine trace elements: selenium, zinc, copper, iron, manganese, fluoride, molybdenum, chromium, and iodine.2,3  Addel Trace can be used with macronutrients as part of the overall nutrition therapy of adult patients.3

Trace element deficiency can obstruct recovery and lead to serious health consequences

Lack of micronutrients can have severe consequences for patients.1 Still, as many as 50% of patients receiving PN are not given micronutrients.2 Trace element deficiency may lead to serious conditions such as anemia, neurological abnormalities, cardiomyopathy, and decreased resistance to infection.1,2,4 Furthermore, micronutrient deficiency can obstruct the process of recovery.1 In addition to baseline deficiencies, patients with severe conditions like chronic illness, sepsis, trauma, or those that are post-surgery may have an increased need for trace elements.1,4,5
